The S 300

The cabinets are based on profiled aluminium extrusions, and their sophisticated construction is enormously strong and stiff and exudes refined elegance. The thickness of the solid baffle allows us to machine the drive unit openings "organically", i.e. there are no sharp edges or corners, allowing the sound to expand and detach itself from the loudspeaker without reflections. This is an important factor in the incredibly spacious imaging capability of the Talis loudspeaker. The all-aluminium construction offers another advantage: the cabinet walls and lid are considerably thinner than their wooden equivalents, making it possible to increase the internal volume. The cabinets are also very heavy and considerably stiffer than conventional designs. These two characteristics are extraordinarily important for accurate bass reproduction, as the cabinet has the least tendency to resonate; there are no resonant effects that could excite the midrange drivers, and this promotes uncoloured midrange reproduction. Sound from inside the cabinet and any unwanted resonance are eliminated by the special absorbent material lining the cabinet walls.

The considerable weight of the cabinet isolates it from its surroundings, eliminating the danger of external vibrations affecting the loudspeaker. The drive units are the very latest result of our development work and are perfectly matched to the cabinets. They are equipped with huge magnets that generate enormous force fields, large high-power voice coils, unobtrusive cone surrounds and extremely deep centring systems, stiff die-cast aluminium cradles and stiff one-piece cones with multiple stiffening measures. The design allows an unusually long, linear cone excursion. All these properties enable TALIS loudspeakers to generate a high-volume, high-pressure sound image despite their compact dimensions; a level of performance you would normally only expect from considerably larger loudspeakers. The dispersion behaviour of conventional combined midrange/treble systems is strongly frequency-dependent: midrange drivers typically radiate sound in a very wide pattern in the lower midrange, but tend to concentrate the sound increasingly at higher frequencies. High-frequency drivers behave analogously. At the transition frequency between midrange and treble, this characteristic results in a sudden change between the concentrated sound of the midrange driver and the very wide pattern of the tweeter, causing an undesirable effect on the soundstage and a disturbing vagueness in the spatial image. That is why our "Ultra Wide Range" treble domes operate in a waveguide (sound guide) machined into the baffle. The contours are precisely calculated to ensure that the dispersion characteristics remain smooth even at the transition frequency. Imaging and soundstage remain stable, without a hint of frequency-dependent inconsistency.

The S 300 is a beautiful, compact three-way floorstanding speaker only 21 cm wide and 105 cm high. This unique loudspeaker exemplifies the technological and sonic philosophy of the entire series: a solid, heavy aluminium enclosure, high-end drivers and crossovers, and an open, unadulterated sound with great dynamics and excellent bass.

The newly developed drivers make incredible performance from the S 300 possible. Two high-end woofers generate deep, powerful and stable bass.

The midrange driver masters the entire vocal range perfectly and sounds lively and natural. The new super tweeter dome is airy, fast, dynamic and without any hardness or sharpness.

The extensive three-way crossover drives the three frequency ranges perfectly and ensures an absolutely spatial and open sound.

For perfect bass reproduction, it is crucial that the loudspeakers stand firmly, resonance-free and securely, decoupled from the floor. That is why we developed a new spike concept. The heavy spikes are turned from solid stainless steel, can be dismantled and have a pointed metal cone or a plastic glide for sensitive floors.

A relatively small cabinet volume normally limits the lower cut-off frequency and the maximum sound pressure in the bass range. This does not apply to the S 300, however, because thanks to the aluminium enclosure the net volume is significantly larger than that of a wooden enclosure. Our engineers have developed extremely complex high-end woofers with powerful magnet systems that can make extremely long strokes thanks to the triple surround. They are precisely matched to the enclosure and, with their stiffened diaphragms, produce incredibly deep, powerful and level-stable bass.

The midrange is an ingenious construction that dominates the entire vocal range from 300 to 2000 Hz and creates striking naturalness with its dynamics and liveliness. The embossed and reinforced diaphragm is absolutely resonance-free, and a special triple surround prevents any form of overshoot.

The new super-high-frequency dome forms the perfect end to the transmission range up to more than 30,000 Hz: airy, fast, dynamic and without any hardness or sharpness.

The extensive three-way crossover is fitted with the best components. Precisely calculated and optimised for the best transient response and transmission behaviour, it easily handles even the highest levels and ensures ideal control of the three frequency ranges. The craftsmanship of the Talis is unique; inside the cabinet, too, every detail is flawlessly executed.
