McIntosh MC275 mk VI 2 x 75 Watt Valve power amplifier
The McIntosh MC275 Mk VI is a tube power amplifier with 2 x 75 W for loudspeakers of 4, 8 or 16 ohms and a Unity Coupled circuit. The MC275 first appeared in 1961, was discontinued in 1971 and returned in 1993 as a commemorative edition. Signal-to-noise ratio 105 dB.
Full description
When first released in 1961, the MC275 vacuum tube amplifier immediately became a favourite because of its ability to drive the power-hungry loudspeakers of the time with high power at low distortion levels. However, as transistors rose and vacuum tubes became 'old technology', the MC275 was discontinued in 1971. Fortunately, that is not where the MC275's story ends.
It returned to production as a special commemorative edition in 1993 to posthumously honour McIntosh co-founder and former president Gordon Gow. The reincarnated MC275 received enormous praise and earned its place back in the product line-up. The overall storyline behind the MC275 and its history with McIntosh is exceptionally rich, and it has been the driving force behind countless home audio systems for decades. It is hard to imagine McIntosh without the MC275.
The MC275, now in its sixth generation, has many subtle improvements over previous releases that have significantly improved performance. Combined with McIntosh's widest-bandwidth output transformer design, the MC275 features tighter bass control and a thermally quiet circuit design. The result is pure music. This vacuum tube power amplifier has all the features to meet the needs of today's music lover, while retaining the qualities that have made the MC275 the most respected McIntosh vacuum tube amplifier.
"Good audio engineering is timeless." - Stereophile
The MC275 can be used in both stereo and mono mode. When used as a stereo amplifier, it delivers 75 watts per channel to 4, 8 or 16 ohm loudspeakers; in mono mode it will deliver 150 watts to a single loudspeaker with an impedance of 2, 4 or 8 ohms. The MC275's full power can be delivered regardless of loudspeaker impedance, thanks to our patented Unity Coupled Circuit output transformer technology – the same technology on which McIntosh was founded in 1949. The two Unity Coupled Circuit output transformers sit next to the power transformer.
Four KT88 vacuum tubes power the output section, while four 12AT7 and three 12AX7A smaller vacuum tubes are used for the input, voltage and driver amplifiers. The MC275 offers both balanced and unbalanced inputs for connecting to your preamplifier and home audio system. It comes with our fuseless Sentry Monitor™ short-circuit protection, which switches off the output stage before the current exceeds safe operating levels and then automatically resets when operating conditions return to normal. Our patented gold-plated Solid Cinch™ speaker terminals ensure the best connection with all speaker cables.
The seven small tubes are illuminated by LEDs to indicate the amplifier's operational status: on start-up they glow orange in succession for a few seconds and then all turn green to indicate the system is ready. In the rare event of an output tube failure, the small tube(s) in front of it turn red to alert you to the problem. Thanks to an input and output for our Power Control technology, other connected McIntosh components, such as preamplifiers, CD players, turntables or media streamers, can be switched on and off automatically.
